Why Your Dentist Still Uses the “F-Word” — Floss!
By Dr. Lance P. Martin, DMD
Spring Valley Dental Group – O’Fallon, IL
Even after decades in practice, I’m still saying it: the “F-word”. Not the one you’re thinking of — I’m talking about floss.
Since reopening our office after the pandemic, we’ve noticed something striking: cavities between teeth are at an all-time high. Even people who brush twice a day and keep their cleanings on schedule are seeing small areas of decay sneak in — and 90% of the time, they start between teeth.
That’s where brushing can’t reach. And that’s why flossing still matters.
The Real Villain: Bacteria (and Their Acidic Waste)
Bacteria are the root of all dental evil. They’re not eating your teeth directly — they’re eating what you eat. As they feed, they produce waste that’s both toxic to your gums and acidic to your enamel.
That acid dissolves minerals from your tooth surface, creating weak spots. Once those spots break down, a cavity is born.
What Can You Do to Prevent Cavities Between Teeth?
- Physically remove bacteria every day.
Flossing scrapes off the film (called biofilm) that brushing alone can’t reach — especially where teeth touch. - Brush carefully at the gumline and chewing surfaces.
It’s about technique, not just time spent brushing. - Rinse with fluoride.
Fluoride helps rebuild enamel and neutralize acid, making your teeth more resistant to decay. - Limit snacking.
Every time you eat — especially carbs and sweets — you’re feeding bacteria. Think of it like throwing gasoline on a fire.
Lack of Flossing Is Great for Business — But Not the Kind We Want
I’ll be honest — I’ve never been busier treating cavities that could have been prevented.
But we’d much rather help you avoid the drill altogether.
Flossing takes less than two minutes a day and can save you hours (and dollars) in the dental chair.
So yes — I’m going to keep saying the “F-word.” You’ll thank me later.
